📝 First European contacts
The most significant contact with Europeans occurred in the 1830s with the voyages of HMS Beagle, led by Robert FitzRoy and accompanied by Charles Darwin. The expedition mapped the Beagle Channel and established close, though uneven, contact with the Yámana. One of the best-known episodes was the temporary relocation to England of an indigenous Yámana, known as "Jemmy Button," who later returned to his homeland. At the end of the 19th century, the establishment of Anglican missions in Ushuaia furthered the cultural and demographic transformation of the local communities.
